Most of the most important thing about being in the creative industry is to be yourself. I know you’ve probably heard this thrown around and it’s sort of lost it’s meaning but it really does make the difference between being a struggling musician and a huge superstar.
Just think about all the top artists and producers in the industry, Eminem, Lil’ Wayne, Jay-Z, Nas, Immortal Technique (in my opinion, he’s one of the best), Timbaland, Dr. Dre, Swiss Beats, Kanye West…just to name a few. Now which one of them would you say is a copy cat (apart from the fact that Kanye samples a hell of a lot, he still makes it his own)…probably none of them. Each of those names has a unique style, which they obtained by being themselves. Many artists/producers think that they must copy the styles of the greats to be that big, but that’s the complete opposite of what you must do, you must find your own unique style, that portrays who you are.
If an artist specifically requests a Kanye/Dre/Timbaland style beat and is willing to pay the price, then by all means take their money and give them what they want. But when it comes to making it big in the industry you must discover your own sound, be who you are and not what others think you should be. The music industry is filled with the same sounding songs, that’s why with your own unique sound you can stand out from the rest and make a big name for yourself.
Don’t be afraid to creating beats that step outside the lines of the norm, it’s a good thing, it means you’re pushing your boundaries and discovering new ways to make good sounding music. If music never progressed and innovated, then you wouldn’t have the likes of the the musicians I mentioned above, because they would not fit the style of that current time. Instead they broke down the boundaries and showed people their new style of music. They didn’t wait until it became fashionable, and neither should you.
Be true to yourself and so others will be true to you.
