Beginner’s Guide to Selling Beats with Airbit, Pt. 2

Uploading & Managing Your Beats
There are 3 types of file you will be uploading to your Airbit account – MP3, WAV & Trackouts/Stems (which are WAV as well). The different file types will be provided with different licenses, which I’ll cover in more detail later.
All your uploading is done in Dashboard > Beats > Upload. You don’t actually need to upload any MP3s, as you can upload the WAV version and our system will convert it to MP3, giving you both files in your account. Clever eh? Of course, if your MP3 is different to your WAV (e.g. signature tag at beginning of MP3, but WAV is untagged), you can of course upload them separately. (The WAV won’t overwrite your MP3).
Trackouts, or Stems, are the individual tracks from your beat which you provide to customers so they have more freedom when creating their mix. They can be provided in one of two ways – both of which will see the files sent as a .zip folder:
Uploaded directly to your account in Beats > Upload > Trackout
Or provided as a third party link from a service like Dropbox/Google Drive. You can also set a password which will be provided with their order.
Voicetags are what protect your beats from theft online. Your tag is essentially a watermark containing your business name, website, etc. (one of my fav’s is ‘Why didn’t you pay for this beat though?’). Tagged beats are for streaming purposes only, and the customer will be sent the original MP3 with a purchase, which should be untagged.
When using Autotag, it’s important to think about how often you want your tag heard. e.g. if you only want it heard 2/3 times through out the beat, add a minute or so of silence to the end of your tag. Conversely, if you want it repeated regularly, maybe only add 20/30 seconds of silence
It may not always be convenient to upload your beats when you want to, but never fear, beat scheduling is here! This means you can upload beats in the hear and now, but they won’t show in your store until your chosen date. This means you can release your beats whilst at work, on holiday, whenever! It’s one less thing to have to worry about, knowing you can upload a beat as soon as it’s ready, rather than having to be at your computer at the exact time.
This is done during the upload process by clicking the calendar in the bottom right and choosing your date & time.
Setting beats to private is a great way to reward your loyal followers & customers.
Maybe I should explain what I mean by this.
The privacy option allows you to hide certain beats from your store, meaning they cannot be listened to or purchased. Unless you send out the direct link for them. A great way to use this is to create a playlist full of private beats, and only provide a link to this to your email subscribers. Advertise this on your homepage – e.g. “sign up for exclusive beats not available to the general public!” – and give added incentive for people to join your mailing list and stay subscribed!

Beats can be set to private during the upload process by clicking the padlock in the top left, or after they’re uploaded by clicking the name of the beat.
Giving Beats Away For Free
Another way to garner email signups is to offer a free beat. This can be done using your lead generation form on your website, or by offering free downloads in your store, in return for their email address.
But what if you want to grow your Twitter following? Or your Youtube subscribers? Airbit allows you to exchange free downloads for both of these, so you can choose what you want to grow. And it’s not ‘one for all’ so you can exchange some beats for email, some for Youtube subs and some for Twitter follows.
If you integrate your mailing list, people who download a free beat will automatically be sent an opt-in email to subscribe to your list. Whether they do or not, you can download the email addresses in Dashboard > Beat > Free Downloads.

Tags & Moods
Adding Tags & Moods is essential to showing up in more search results. You might upload a drake type beat, but that doesn’t mean that it will show up in search results if someone searches for “Drake”. Unless you add this as a tag, then our search engine knows your beat is relevant to to the customer’s search.
Like with any search engine, this doesn’t mean you should add as many tags as possible, no matter how irrelevant they are. Otherwise customers will associate your name with beats that aren’t relevant to them, and you can say goodbye to any chance of them listening to your beats.
Moods are great for when someone doesn’t know exactly what they’re looking for, but they know they want to find something ‘chilled’, or ‘aggressive’, ‘dark’, etc. Again – your beats won’t show in these browse results if you haven’t added the moods.
Tags & Moods can be added when uploading a beat, or afterwards by clicking the beat name in Dashboard > Beats > My Beats
A Few More Things…
Connecting your Facebook & Twitter accounts (Dashboard > Integrations > Social) will allow you to auto post when you upload a beat. This means and automatic Facebook Post or Tweet can be sent advertising the fact that you’ve just uploaded a new beat. This is a great way to keep your followers up to date with minimal time consumption!
You can set your store to autoplay a beat so when someone lands on your page, your chosen beat will start playing straight away. There are two things you need to do for this to work:
Head to Dashboard > Music Stores > HTML5 and select your configuration. Then make sure ‘Disable Autoplay’ is set to NO.
Then head to Dashboard > Beats > My Beats and click the menu icon the right of your chosen beat and hit – you guessed it – ‘Set to Autoplay’.
Please note – Autoplay does not work on Soundclick or on mobile devices
Your brand is everything that represents you and your business – from your logo, your website, name, your particular sound, and even down to the colours you use and the prices you set. Having an instantly recognisable brand is considered by many successful producers as a must have.
Your website should be:
- Easy to navigate.
How your website looks and performs says a lot about you & your business, and, if not done correctly, could lose you a potential customer before they’ve even heard one of your beats. Would you be comfortable giving your card details to a website that doesn’t function properly and looks like it was made in the 90s?
If you’re unfamiliar with website building I recommend hiring a professional to do this for you, as it will be well worth the investment. Having a website that looks amateur, or doesn’t function properly could lose you more customers and therefore money, than the amount you would spend on hiring a pro.

This topic has always been – and always will be – debated amongst producers. Some are happy to sell $5 dollar beats just to get the sale, whilst others believe you should charge a higher price that more accurately reflects the time and effort that goes into beat making. I tend to agree with the “beats should reflect their true value” school of thinking (aka not $5/beat), but hey, if you’re making a living selling beats for pennies, who am I to tell you you’re wrong.
The average price for a basic non-exclusive license is around $10 – $30, but of course, this can vary from as little as $1 (really) to as much as $50. And there are people at both ends of the spectrum who are leading successful careers. Other non exclusive licenses tend to work their way up in pricing up to around the $100 mark. Exclusive licenses can – and do – go for thousands of dollars, but again, competitiveness and the need to make a sale means you can get exclusives for one/two hundred dollars.
So a typical licensing structure might look something like this:
Basic Non Exclusive – $20
Non Exclusive + Wav – $35
Premium – $60
Professional – $100
Exclusive – $1000
Of course, this can vary widely.
With airbit, you can accept offers on your beats, meaning you can set a price (or not) and allow people to submit offers if they don’t want to match your price. This is especially good for (and pretty much only used with) Exclusive licenses, as it allows artists to get your most expensive license at a price they can afford, and allows you to make the sale without losing out because they were unwilling to pay the price you’ve set.
