Twitter is becoming the go-to social platform for a lot of producers that are looking to reach out to potential clients, as well as other people in the music industry. Facebook had that crown for years but with all of the changes they have made, it has been more difficult to actually post something and have your audience actually see it.
However, just posting an update on Twitter is not the way to network or sell more beats, but having lists is much better.

Twitter Lists And Why They Are Very Useful To You
When I first signed up for Twitter, the first thing that happened is I didn’t know what was going on. I had a hard enough time just trying to figure out how to post something or find people! But now all of that has changed, and I have seen how useful a lot of Twitter features really are. Like lists.
A Twitter list is a way for you to organize many people into a group. You don’t necessarily have to follow these people, as you can just add them to your list. But the whole point of having a list and being on Twitter is so you can network and sell beats, right? So you should follow these people.
The reason why lists are so good is that it makes it much easier for you to find the people you are looking for. For example, if you are following 1,000 people then how can you possibly keep tabs on all those people when you’re on the Twitter homepage? You can’t, that’s how. It’s impossible for you to really see what those 1,000 people are tweeting about because there is just too many, and unlike Facebook, on Twitter you can post much more quickly, so that makes it much harder to follow what’s going on.
With lists, you can now see all the updates of only the people in a particular list. Sounds much easier, doesn’t it?
It’s A Great Way To Network and Market
Since Twitter’s policy is that your tweet cannot contain more than 140 characters, most people just post quick tweets about themselves and don’t care about anyone else. Face it, that’s the cold, hard truth about Twitter.
This is why it’s very important that you grab peoples’ attention by tweeting the right away, and a list will help you do that.
Let’s say you’re trying to sell your beats and you have created a list of around twenty rappers that are looking for beats (maybe you saw them post a hashtag about buying beats). What you want to do is watch those people on your list and see what they are posting about, how they’re posting, and when they’re posting.
This will quickly give you an idea of what they are all about. The wrong thing to do is to just hit them up and see if they want to buy your beats. Instead, follow them and after a while, retweet them or reply to some of their tweets.
But do it the right way.
If Rapper X usually posts something like this:
“Just wrote some rhymes, now I gotta find #beats” – that’s your opening. Either reply to him with something such as, “#beats are my specialty. I might be able to help you”, or simply retweet him.
What you just did was replied to him and also posted the #beats hashtag, which might get the attention of another rapper looking for beats. If Rapper X is using the #beats hashtag, then most likely other rappers are as well. So you basically have contacted a potential client, and opened yourself up to other possible contacts.
You do not want to be aggressive and seem “spammy”, so that’s why it’s important to be patient and see how the people on your list post. In other words, learn their habits.
The Types Of Lists You Should Be Making
The thing with lists is that you don’t want to make just any list, it has to be a list that is actually going to be useful to you.
These are some of the types of lists you should create:
  • People you have sold beats to (clients)
  • People you want to network with (potential clients)
  • Influential people in the music world
Having a list of your clients is great because you can keep track of just what they are doing. So if you are looking to sell beats, all you have to do is take a look at your list and see if any clients are looking to buy.
People you want to network with is important because these are potential clients. This is where you have to follow them and study what they post. If one of them needs a beat, or even if they are tweeting about the new Kanye album, that’s your opportunity to step in and strike up a relevant conversation with them.
Influential people in the music industry is also very important because it’s not about selling at this point. It might not even be about networking. Instead, it might just come in handy because one of them might just tweet useful links or tips. Either way, you can learn from these people, and maybe – just maybe you can connect with some of them and see where it takes you.
The Downside Of Twitter Lists
If you have your own website, then you could be collecting peoples’ email addresses that way and reach out to them by sending out emails.
With lists, you can’t do that.
The downside is that Twitter doesn’t allow you to tweet to only the people in your list. There are some workarounds, but nothing that is simple. It could be that the Twitter engineers just can’t be bothered to create that feature, or they see it as a major security issue (think of all the spam that could be sent out).
So basically, lists are great for organizing and cutting out all the typical homepage clutter that is on Twitter. Recent news shows that Twitter is planning on streamlining their homepage to be similar to Facebook’s, where only the most relevant tweets will be shown to you. I don’t know how true it is, but hopefully that doesn’t turn people off Twitter.
So if you’re looking to connect, network, and sell beats by using Twitter, there is no better way to do it but with lists.
