What’s going on music producers? It’s Curtiss King of airbit.com, here today to answer a question specifically from Jacob on our Facebook. He asked, should beginners tap into advertisements on Facebook or any other website? Should they even be worried about advertisements?

Music producers, as if the process is not already overwhelming, as if you’re not already concerned about whether your snare needs a little bit more snap, whether your kick needs a little bit more oomph, whether your 00:32 need a little bit more sizzle. As if that process isn’t enough, you mean to tell me Curtiss that I gotta focus on Facebook ads and advertisements and become an ad genius in the same process? Slow it down, no you do not have to become an ad specialist in the very beginning. Actually, I suggest that you don’t even try, not even try, but you shouldn’t even be concerning yourself with embarking on that journey.

Here’s the thing to understand:

Advertisement is not just the stale word that you use, you know, when you’re trying to market your product. I think we have to erase that from our minds. Advertising is a skill set, advertising is an art form and you should address it as such. Here’s the thing you know, us as producers and even some rappers out there will look at you know, our art form will give 110% energy into that and then we get to the business of our music and then it gets really stale and we become very stagnant about you know, well how do I market it? Well, you were the creative force that even made this product possible out of sounds that you heard, out of thin air, and you made them a reality out of sounds that were given to you, that were designed to sound one way, you made them sound another way. You are the creative. So, that being said, I would suggest that a beginner, Jacob, if you are a beginner, I would suggest that you focus more on investing your energy, investing you know, your hard-earned dollars into your growth. Investing it into your equipment, investing it into information that is going to help your product first of all.

It’s almost like, can you imagine if your favorite soda company, you know, decided to put one of their first drafts out as a soda, just throw it out there into the market place. Can you imagine the backlash if you would’ve had you know, I don’t know? If Sprite would’ve put Sprite out and say they never made it a clear soda, say the flavour of it was like really like, more that water, like fizzy water and then they put that out there, then it was nah, nah, nah, nah, nah. That’s just the draft, fam. But, I’m still trying to sell it. It just doesn’t make any sense. So, why should it be any different when it comes to the product that is not just your beats but the product that is you.

Now, I’m not saying you shouldn’t sell until you’re ready. That’s not what I’m saying either, some people have had massive success, because they just you know, have a natural talent for a specific sound, get it out to the market place and a specific demographic wants that. But, here’s the thing about it, most beginners, don’t even know what their demographic is. So, Jacob, here’s my suggestion for you when it comes to advertisements, don’t concern yourself too early with it. You know, the whole purpose of advertising is to get in front of the demographic, most likely to come to your website and want to purchase from you, if not that day, another day later, you get an email, you start that relationship. But the whole purpose of advertising is getting the correct demographic. My question to you is this, do you know your demographic? You know, if you don’t know who are the people that would most likely like your beats, even beyond that. If you don’t even know what your strengths are within your beats, you know, you don’t know how to properly market yourself.

You’re still trying to figure things out. There’s not a problem with that. You know, it took me a while before I understood that what I am really marketing, within my music production is my percussion, my drums, the larger than life sort of feelings that people get when they listen to my beats. That’s what emotions evoked from my beats. I understood that. It took me a while, but when I understood that I said oh, everything has to change. Everything must look larger than life, the logo must look, not like every other producer, it must look. I wanted to make it look like it’s a corporate logo that could sit aside Pepsi, that could sit aside Google, that could sit aside you know Windows, any company that I every looked up to, I wanted this to align with that and so then once I knew that aspect of what I represented, it helped me understand how to market myself and then what advertisements would be best to bring those people to my particular business.

So, when it comes to advertisement, take it slow. I’m not saying don’t consume information, but. Maybe I am, because sometimes you can consume so much information you get analysis paralysis and you don’t do anything at all cause you hear everybody saying you shouldn’t do this, don’t do this, don’t do this, you don’t do anything at all. Which is a very human thing. You know you don’t wanna get in a situation where you’re getting way too much information before you’re ready for it. So, if you’re a beginner, focus on your art. Focus on what you truly love. Once you love that, once you understand the process. You’re gonna find something that occurs when you’re growing within music. You’re gonna find that same growth to occur when you start to get into the business of your music. You know, the same way that you had to learn you know, your favorite tempo, sort of your group, your swing, the right kind of snares that you like. The way that you mix your snares, the way that you mix your snares, they way that you mix your kicks. All these things that you had to learn along the way or you’re still learning. You’re gonna learn that about business, you’re gonna understand you know, the need to have a target demographic that you’re pointing to.

You’re gonna wanna know the strengths of having you know, sort of AB testing in advertisement, where basically you take you know, two different ads, or you take one ad and say like for instance, you change the text of one of them to appeal and another text to appeal and you put those out there and basically you are testing the same audience with two different variations or  maybe you could even AB split test an audience and you can say you know, let’s try 17-24 year old who are still in college, let’s try 28-35 year old who are in the work force. It gets crazy when it comes to this marketing and advertising.

So, before you jump into that beast, understand the thing that you came here to love because sometimes you can get into something else, and then you end up you know, watching a 4 hour tutorial about Facebook ads and then you start asking yourself the question, why am I watching, I didn’t come into music to learn about advertisements, but then you see how required it is to you know, after you have invested the time into your beat, you start seeing how much of a requirement this is to get your music in front of the right people But, I’m saying take it a step at a time. You don’t have to understand everything all today. Jacob, take your time. If you still consider yourself a beginner, focus on the thing that you love the most, which is the music.
